Albinism id defined like the lacking or partial failure of a living organism to produce a melanin pigment. There are different kinds of albinism. In reptiles, the specimen who are completely lacking of pigment are defined like leukocytic (but with red eyes). Albinos are composed of two groups: tyrosinase-negative ones (red eyes and absent or almost absent pigment) and tyrosinase-positive ones (red eyes at birth but which become early light brown and an usually ivory soft candy pattern pigment).

In this way Testudo marginata albina can be observed. This selection has the peculiarity to be tyrosinase-positive. This define the great advantage that eyes, red at birth, become early light brown, in order to make these tortoises resistant to sun light like normal specimen.

Albinism can be found in all animal and vegetable reign with often very low incidence frequency, due to the fact that in nature it is selected in a negative way.

Albinism is a recessive mutation. In order to manifest itself it is necessary that are affected both gene reproductions which produce melanin. This, like other recessive mutations, is transmitted by carrier specimen in which it is present, even in just only one reproduction dominated by another normal perfectly working one, such as to induce a normal pigment. These carring animals are defined like heterozygotes, while an albino is defined like recessive homozygote and both its gene reproductions are changed.
